IRS technology systems are behind the times, according to one report. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) recently audited the management of the “legacy” systems of the IRS and found much improvement was needed. “The IRS has not developed specific or long-term plans to address updating, replacing, or retiring most of its legacy systems,” TIGTA said. Overall, of 669 IRS systems, TIGTA found 231 were legacy, 150 weren’t and the remainder weren’t determinable due to missing information. TIGTA also identified 46 systems as legacy that the IRS hadn’t and said an additional 49 systems will become legacy within the next 10 years.
