Erroneous IRS notices were sent to 260,000 taxpayers in early Feb. 2021. CP59 Notices informed taxpayers that they hadn’t filed 2019 federal returns. In a statement on its website, the IRS acknowledged that, due to COVID-19, the agency was forced to scale back staff including many in its mail processing operations, to focus efforts on “mission-critical” tasks of accepting tax returns and mailing refunds. The staff shortage created a mail backlog that includes many 2019 tax returns that were filed but still await processing. If you received a CP59 and you have filed your 2019 return, no action is necessary and “the IRS regrets any confusion caused by this mailing,” the statement said.  Call or visit our website for more information!
