Economic Impact Payments (EIPs) will soon be sent to certain taxpayers whose payments had been sidelined. The IRS has announced that in early-to-mid-September, it will send EIPs to about 50,000 “injured spouses” whose portion of the EIP was diverted to pay past-due child support owed by their spouses. This applies to joint-filer spouses who aren’t liable for past-due child support and who filed an Injured Spouse Allocation claim (Form 8379) with their joint 2019 tax return (or 2018 for some). The joint EIP will be split, with one half sent to each spouse. Only the spouse who is liable for child support will have his or her EIP offset by past-due support.
