Federal government agencies, including the IRS, were dramatically affected by COVID-19. How well did the IRS protect its workers and the public from the pandemic? In April of 2021, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) conducted unannounced inspections at 20 of 350 Taxpayer Assistance Centers and found that mostly, safety protocols were followed. Workstations and waiting areas were altered for proper distancing, though not all individuals followed distance mandates. Taxpayer access was limited to by-appointment-only.
